Virginia Wildlife Trail

Maymont’s Virginia Wildlife Trail brings you up close with Virginia native species (historic and present), most of which are wildlife rescues, along a mile-long trail. The trail is now open after two years of enhancements, including new habitats for our new coyotes and porcupines!

Take a walk on the wild side!

The Virginia Wildlife Trail is home to over a dozen species of native animals (historic and present), most of whom are wildlife rescues. Along the mile-long trail, interpretive signs explain each species’ role in our ecosystem, showing the rich diversity of wildlife in our region.

You may view the wildlife along the trail daily during Maymont's current hours. Come early to increase your chances of seeing our wildlife when they are most active! The trail is within a 40-acre valley located between the historic estate, the Maymont Farm and The Robins Nature Center.

Note: We do not accept wild or domestic animals from the public.

Enhance your trail visit

For a deeper experience of the Virginia Wildlife Trail, sign up for a Trail Trek walking tour or Breakfast with the Bears program. Offered most weekends after reopening through fall, the guided walking tours and animal encounter programs give you insights into the natural histories of the animals that share our environment.

Know Before You Go

Free to visit, donations welcome! The Virginia Wildlife Trail, like the rest of Maymont's outdoor space, is free to visit. Ticketed experiences are optional, see above.

Donations are appreciated. Maymont Foundation is a nonprofit organization that, with your support, cares for this public green space and all of the wildlife who call it home. Another way you can support animal care, is by symbolically adopting an animal!
