The Spirit of Generosity

Honorary Chairs: Steve and Kathie Markel

A landmark. A retreat. A treasure. A living classroom. That’s how many Richmonders describe Maymont, the Dooley’s American estate set high above the banks of the James River. Given to the people of the city nearly a century ago, Maymont has enriched lives for generations. As you can imagine, things have changed over the years. Maymont hosts half a million guests from around the globe annually who are looking for a place to unplug and reconnect with family, with community, with the outdoors, with self. And our guests are looking for a full, well-rounded experience when they visit Maymont, whether it’s educational, social or even reflective. Watch our Spirit of Generosity video.

Bringing the Guest Experience to a Whole New Level

The Spirit of Generosity Campaign is your way to help preserve, protect and polish one of Richmond’s favorite attractions for today’s guests and future generations. From the Nature Center to the Carriage House to the Farm to the Mansion, there is a wealth of fascinating historical and environmental information to be discovered within Maymont’s 100 acres. New interpretive and way-finding signage transforms how guests understand and experience the estate, and expanded welcome areas allow guests to more easily plan their outings for learning and leisure. Improved exhibits enrich the guest experience, connecting them to the past while igniting ideas for the future.

Ensuring Maymont’s Legacy

The Dooleys gave us the extraordinary gift of Maymont, but it is our responsibility to secure its ongoing care for the enjoyment of today’s guests and generations to come. Endowments for general operations as well as the historical estate, gardens and trees, and wildlife and the natural environment will allow Maymont Foundation to spend additional funds each year on the care and maintenance of the estate, help relieve financial burdens during times of urgent need or economic challenge, and continue to generate income in perpetuity.

One of Richmond’s most important resources is right at Maymont’s front door, so it is only fitting that we continue to celebrate life along the James River with renovations and enhancements at the Farm and  Nature Center.

By preserving the past, Maymont can look forward to a better tomorrow. We can lead the way in 21st century conservation and preservation, fully interpreting the estate’s impressive collection of culturally relevant Gilded Age architecture. We can open minds and hearts to the joy of life-long learning, offering inspiration and education in a casual, welcoming environment for all.
