Animal Appreciation Program

The Animal Appreciation program is a special partnership between local elementary school children and Maymont’s animals. Students throughout the greater Richmond metropolitan region help support the care of Maymont’s animals through creative, community-minded fundraising efforts. Teachers creatively weave the Animal Appreciation program into their science curriculum as well as using it as a learning experience in economics and money.

Maymont is home to many native Virginia animals including mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish. Hundreds of animals, representing 80 species, reside within Maymont’s grounds—at the Maymont Farm, in the Wildlife Exhibits and in the Nature Center. These animals depend on the support of the community for their feed and care. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our Animal Appreciation program participants, Maymont continues to offer meaningful, firsthand experiences with nature through school programs that reach nearly 20,000 area school children each year.

Key to the success of the Animal Appreciation program is the enthusiastic support of school teachers, staff and volunteers. The online resources listed below provide information about the program and assist schools and teachers in organizing Animal Appreciation fundraising efforts. For questions, more information or to share your suggestions, comments or stories about the program, please email or call 804-358-7166, ext. 330.

Maymont’s Animal Appreciation Program is supported by local schools, including Glen Allen Elementary School, which selected the 2017-2018 Animal of the Year, the river otter.
