Celebrate the Fall With Beer, Brats and Family Fun at Maymont's Bier-Garden, September 20-21
Richmond, Virginia – Everyone is invited to celebrate the arrival of fall by joining friends and family at Bier-Garden, September 20-21. Come out to Maymont to toast the opening weekend of Munich’s famous folk festival with beer, bratwurst and family fun in a beautiful outdoor setting.
Wear your lederhosen or dirndl, or come as you are! Revelers of all ages will find a festive scene with lively music, yard games, a polka band and German folk dancers, and an authentic Marketplatz featuring local artisans selling hand-crafted treats and gifts. Test your strength and endurance in the Stein-Hoisting Contests.
Kids are welcome to join in the fun in the Kinderzone for an afternoon of crafts, games, entertainment and activities hosted by Goldfish Swim School and Soccer Shots. Local food trucks will offer kid-friendly food options and fun festival treats like funnel cakes, popcorn and waffles.
Bier-Garden opens from 11:30am to 6:30pm each day. Guests can savor mouth-watering Bavarian and Polish specialties cooked up by local chefs in the Brathaus, and choose from a selection of beers, including authentic Paulaner beer, or craft brews by Bingo Beer and Väsen. Cider and non-alcoholic options will be available, too. Then, find a seat at a picnic table on the lawn or at one of the long tables under the big Festhaus tent and enjoy lively music by DJ BearBonez and performances by Jonathan the Juggler.
“Bier-Garden at Maymont is the next best thing to traveling to Munich for Oktoberfest,” said Parke Richeson, President and CEO of Maymont Foundation. “Come toast the fall with traditional German food, cold beer and fun among the historic buildings and landscaped gardens.”
Guests are encouraged to register in advance, with all proceeds helping Maymont care for its gardens, animals and historic collections. Admission is $10 per person; $6 for children ages 16 and under. Admission is free for Maymont members and participants in the Museums for All program, when they present a SNAP/EBT card. Event admission includes entry to The Robins Nature Center from 11:30am-5pm. (The Maymont Mansion remains closed for renovations.)
Food and beverages are available for separate purchase; tokens for beer, cider and more are $8 for a 16-oz pour, and sturdy commemorative glass steins can be purchased for an authentic Oktoberfest experience.
For dedicated beer aficionados and the homebrew-curious, Dan Jablow of Small Batch Brewing will demonstrate the steps involved in crafting beer at home. He is a brewery consultant to startup and growing breweries, and serves as Director of Brewing Education at University of Richmond's School of Professional and Continuing Studies.
Tickets are non-refundable. Bier-Garden is a rain or shine event, except in case of severe weather.
Event parking is available at the Hampton Street entrance, by The Robins Nature Center, and also Maymont Farm parking lots. Ride sharing and public transit are strongly encouraged.
