Celebrate an Old-Fashioned Christmas and Other Holiday Delights at Maymont

Old-Fashioned Christmas at Maymont

Release Date: November 14, 2018

A cherished holiday tradition enjoyed by generations of families, Old-Fashioned Christmas, returns to Maymont on Sunday, December 2 from 12 to 4:30 p.m. Victorian ladies and gentlemen graciously welcome guests to the estate, where they can celebrate the season with special activities and entertainment that are sure to fill everyone with holiday spirit. Admission to the event is free, with activities available for a small fee.

Attendees are invited to visit the Dooleys’ spectacularly decorated Gilded Age mansion, where they’ll marvel at hundreds of ornaments on the 12-foot Christmas tree, the opulent dining room set for a feast and draped with red satin ribbon, and the gifts and games of 1893. They also can take in all the preparations Belowstairs, where plans are underway for a grand Victorian Christmas. Guided mansion tours are $5 per person and $4 for members and children ages 12 and under. Guests also can enjoy a festive horse-drawn carriage ride around the Mansion ($5 per person; $4 for members and children ages 12 and under) and make pinecone winter birdfeeders – one to take home and one for the birds at Maymont ($5 for two).

In-between touring the Mansion and taking a carriage ride, guests can partake in free activities on the Carriage House Lawn, whether it’s listening to the charming Victorian Storyteller, making a Victorian ornament or an old fashioned toy, or penning a letter to – and of course taking a picture with – jolly old St. Nick. Merry musical performances by local schools and community groups, as well as Lamar Banister’s antique musical revue, are sure to elevate everyone’s joyous mood. Guests can even find a treasure or two at the artisans’ Marketplace featuring local vendors selling wreaths, ornaments, scarves and candles. They also can fuel their holiday fun with refreshments from Monique’s Crepes, Espresso A-Go-Go, and Bikini Panini.

“Old-Fashioned Christmas is charming way for families and friends to celebrate the season,” said Parke Richeson, Executive Director at Maymont. “We love to see generations from all areas of the Richmond region coming together to experience this delightful event.”

The rest of the 2018 season will be just as merry, with additional holiday events happening November through January.
