Garden Glow at Maymont Lights Up the Japanese Garden

Enchanting Experience Will Delight All Ages, October 26-November 10

Garden Glow at Maymont

Release Date: September 11, 2019

An enchanting experience will brighten fall nights at Maymont as the historic Japanese Garden becomes a mesmerizing, illuminated landscape for Garden Glow, held nightly from Saturday, October 26 to Sunday, November 10, 6 to 10pm. Families, couples and nature lovers of all ages will admire colorful sparkles and shimmers within the cascading waterfall, stroll among towering trees that stand aglow, and marvel at the breathtaking illuminations of winding waterways, rolling hills, bridges and lanterns. Highlights also will include two artistic lighted sculptures, one at the event entrance and one in the garden, designed and created by members of Ikebana of Richmond – a group of artists who practice the art of Japanese flower arrangement.

“The magnificent beauty of the Japanese Garden lit in a rainbow of colors exceeded all our expectations during the inaugural event last year,” said Peggy Singlemann, Maymont Director of Park Operations & Horticulture. “The inspiration, from my visit to dramatically lit gardens in Japan, came to life in ways I couldn’t have imagined. And it’s going to be even better this year!”

New this year, guests will enter the event at the Historic Estate entrance at 1700 Hampton Street. Attendees will start their journey on a walk through the woodland path to the Japanese Garden. Golf carts and a wheelchair-friendly van will be available upon request for guests who need transportation assistance. In addition to the illuminated garden scenes, a schedule of fun family crafts and entertainment will be offered, and snacks and beverages, including beer and wine, will be available for purchase. Activities and entertainment will vary nightly.

“We are eagerly looking forward to hosting Garden Glow this year for the delight of our community and all our guests,” said Parke Richeson, Maymont Executive Director. “For nearly 100 years, the Japanese Garden at Maymont has been one of Richmond’s favorite destinations, and that public affection was shown by the popularity of the event last year. Tickets for most days sold out so we’re increasing capacity in 2019 while maintaining a comfortable atmosphere in the garden. Now that the word is out about this wonderful experience, we expect it to be even more popular this year.”

Garden Glow tickets may be purchased online in advance beginning Monday, September 16. Advance ticket prices are $12 for adults, $7 for children ages 4-12, and free for children ages 3 and under. Maymont members receive a discount online or at the door. Tickets also will be available on-site during the event, depending on availability.

Parking for Garden Glow at Maymont is free and will be located at the Historic Estate entrance parking lot at 1700 Hampton Street in Richmond, Virginia. Guests are invited to enjoy crafts, entertainment and refreshments on the Carriage House Lawn near the entrance, before or after their garden experience. The event will be held rain or shine, except in the case of severe weather. Guests are encouraged to wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear suited for walking.

The event is sponsored by Hamilton Beach Brands and Genworth, with in-kind support by The Lighting & Sound Company.
