Spring Break Week Adventures Await at Maymont
Action-Packed Week Offers Family Fun for All Ages

Families will spring into action during Spring Break Week at Maymont, April 1-5, 2019. Guests of all ages will enjoy engaging and entertaining programs and activities every day, and Maymont’s indoor exhibits, including the Mansion and Nature Center, will be open all week – even on Monday, when they are usually closed.
“Maymont’s 100-acre playground is the perfect place for kids to explore and discover outside of the classroom,” said Parke Richeson, Maymont Executive Director. “We look forward to hosting families from all communities in the Richmond region during Spring Break Week, when they will experience the delights of Maymont, from nature and animals to grand trees and treats from the past.”
Families are encouraged to play, learn and explore during programs where they can:
- Go on a make-believe journey filled with imaginative tales, fun activities and a visit with a special furry animal
- Stop by Jack’s Vegetable Garden to learn how to grow food in small spaces
- Meet Maymont’s animal family, from farm friends like goats and pigs, to rescued wildlife like alligators and snakes
- Crack secret codes for clues, and use maps and riddles to explore the estate
- Find a swan in the bedroom, a rabbit on the cabinet and other wonders within the Maymont Mansion
- Enjoy games from long ago, close encounters with creepy creatures, pinwheel-making, and more
- Climb the backstairs to discover hidden doors and bells, and experience life and work at the estate 100 years ago
- Soar into the world of birds with a few of Maymont’s avian ambassadors
- Search for fairies at Maymont, receive wings and a wand, and find treasures along the way

Since 1975, Maymont has been maintained and operated by the nonprofit Maymont Foundation. To keep the estate open and free to the public, the Foundation must raise more than $3 million each year through private donations.

Monday-Friday, April 1-5, 10-10:45am, Farm Classroom
A charming storyteller and beloved characters take children on a make-believe journey filled with imaginative tales, fun activities and a visit with a special furry animal. A different story each day highlights the wonders that abound at Maymont. Ages 4-7; parents are welcome! $12 per child/$10 members. Walk-ups welcome, space permitting. Register online.
Adventures in Vegetable Growing
Monday-Friday, April 1-5, 10am-3pm, Jack’s Vegetable Garden
Stop by Jack’s Vegetable Garden and learn how to grow food in small spaces. Sow a seed with a Master Gardener and take it home to grow. Free!
Farm Animal Encounters
Monday-Friday, April 1-5, 11am-12pm, Farm Classroom
Meet some of Maymont’s animal ambassadors during feathered and furry close encounters. Different animals will be featured at each program and may include a goat, sheep, chicken or other farm friend. $8 per person/$6 members. Register online.
Family Scavenger Hunt
Monday-Friday, April 1-5, 11am-1pm, Maymont Grounds
Explore Maymont’s 100 acres in a whole new way! Crack secret codes for clues, and use maps and riddles to find your way around the estate in this family-friendly scavenger hunt. Different difficulty levels are available. Ages 4 and older; adult must accompany child. $15 per family or group (up to four people)/$12 members. Walk-ups welcome, space permitting. Register online.
Monday-Friday, April 1-5, 1-2pm, Nature Center
Meet some of Maymont’s animal ambassadors during scaly, feathered and furry close encounters. Different animals will be featured at each program and may include an alligator, snake, turtle, bird of prey or an animal of the Chesapeake Bay. $8 per person/$6 members (includes Nature Center admission). Walk-ups welcome, space permitting. Register online.
A Rabbit on the Cabinet
Monday-Friday, April 1-5, 2-2:30pm, Maymont Mansion
Discover the enchanting home of the James and Sallie Dooley as their nieces and nephews must have seen it more than 100 years ago. Find a lion in the fireplace, a swan in the bedroom, a rabbit on the cabinet and more as the wonders within the mansion are revealed to children of all ages. $5 per person.
NEW! Mini-Ventures at Maymont
Monday-Friday, April 1-5, 2-3pm, Farm Classroom
Ready to explore, experience and enjoy all that Maymont has to offer? Visit the Farm classroom each day for short activities like games from long ago, close encounters with creepy creatures, pinwheel-making, a gardening project or feeding the goats. Each day brings a different fun-filled adventure for boys and girls of all ages. Free!
The Secret Life of a Victorian House
Monday-Friday, April 1-5, 3-3:45pm, Maymont Mansion
The Dooleys’ housemaid brings the mansion to life during a family-friendly tour of the upstairs and downstairs of their grand home. Climb the backstairs to discover hidden doors and bells as you experience life and work at the estate 100 years ago. $6 per person/$4 members.
Birds of Prey
Monday-Friday, April 1-5, 3:30-4:30pm, Raptor Valley Amphitheater
Soar into the world of birds! Enjoy an up-close encounter with a few of Maymont’s avian ambassadors before seeing birds in action during an exclusive experience in Raptor Valley. Learn about the unique adaptations of these amazing animals and discover how zoologists train and care for them. $9 per person/$7 members. Register online.
Thursday, April 4, 10:30am-12pm, Garden Hall
Do you believe in fairies? Enjoy a magical morning filled with whimsy and make-believe. Play games, make wishes, hear stories and receive your very own wings and wand as you learn what fairies like to do and where they like to hide. Imaginative clues guide you around the lawns of Maymont as you search for the winged creatures, finding treasures along the way. This enchanting program concludes with a sweet treat of fairy cakes and lemonade. Meet at Maymont’s Carriage House. Ages 4-8. $22 per child/$18 members. Parents are welcome to observe the program.
