Homeschool Days at Maymont

Maymont’s field investigation programs are a great option for homeschooled students! Enrich your student’s environmental science, history and social studies with hands-on experiences and interactive learning tools that take advantage of Maymont’s new facilities as well as the historic 100-acre landscape.

Cost: $10 per student

Four different programs are offered on March 6, March 13, March 20 and March 27.

(March 6) Homeschool Days: Plant and Creature Features (grades K-3)

Claws, feathers, thorns, scales and shells…every animal and plant is unique! Learn about special adaptations that allow for animals and plants to survive and thrive, through group activities and real-life encounters with live animals. Meet at The Robins Nature Center, where a tour is included.

(March 13) Homeschool Days: Wetlands Explorations (grades 4-7)

Get your hands dirty and learn about the importance of wetlands! Use dip nets to safely capture and observe aquatic creatures, and learn about the importance of sub-aquatic vegetation for habitats and water quality. Through interactive technology, students will identify their watershed and discuss how wetlands are essential for a healthy James River. Meet at The Robins Nature Center, where a tour is included.

(March 20) Homeschool Days: Richmond Then and Now (grades K-3)

What makes a community? Learn about the different people who made up the Richmond community during the Gilded Age and what impacts they made that still affect us today. Read a book with us and play a game of community cooperation and leave with a special craft. Meet at the Stone Barn Active Learning Classroom. A Maymont Mansion tour is included.

(March 27) Homeschool Days: Industrial Innovations of the Gilded Age (grades 4-7)

What fueled the industries and innovations of the Gilded Age? Come explore how coal was found, processed and used in the early 1900s! Students will participate in an immersive activity to learn about work conditions and how the energy resources that we use impact more than just the environment. Meet at the Stone Barn Active Learning Classroom. A Maymont Mansion tour is included.
