Planting Pinwheels for Child Abuse Prevention

As a popular destination for children and families, Maymont is honored to partner with SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) to display a temporary pinwheel garden at the Farm starting today.

The following is a guest post by Katelynn Jarrells, Operations Coordinator at Greater Richmond SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now).

It takes more than love and keeping them safe to raise a resilient child – one who is successful in school, can manage their emotions, develop and maintain relationships with adults and peers, and is able to solve problems, express their thoughts and feelings, and bounce back from a bad experience.

April is Child abuse Prevention Month, and the theme for 2018 is Resilience. This year we are so excited to partner with Maymont March 30-April 6 by planting a Pinwheel Garden at the Farm’s entrance.

Reminiscent of happy childhood memories, pinwheels are the national symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention. The Pinwheels for Prevention campaign focuses on positive efforts to ensure that all children have the safe, stable, nurturing families they deserve. By promoting positive parenting and healthy families, EVERY child will benefit.

There are so many ways for you, your family, your business, your school, and your community to become involved and help Greater Richmond SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) to prevent child abuse and neglect in the Greater Richmond area. We will have many more opportunities to help support SCAN and raise awareness around Child Abuse Prevention Month throughout April. Learn more about our programs and how to get involved at Greater Richmond SCAN.

Visit Maymont March 30-April 6 to see the Pinwheel Garden at the Farm entrance. To request your own pinwheels, contact Greater Richmond SCAN at 804-257-7226 or (suggested donation is $1 per pinwheel).

Thank you for creating a safer community for all our children and protecting their only childhood.
