Summer Fun at Maymont: The Robins Nature Center to Open 6 Days a Week All Summer — And More to Explore!

Richmond, Virginia- Starting Memorial Day this year El Centro de la Naturaleza Robins at Maymont will be open six days a week through Labor Day, from 10am to 5pm, Tuesdays through Sundays. The Robins Nature Center showcases the remarkable ecology of the James River ecosystem through interactive exhibits, active play areas and 30,000 gallons of aquaria filled with fish, reptiles, amphibians and a pair of otters.

The Robins Nature Center is the largest facility of its kind showcasing animals of the James River and Chesapeake Bay and raising awareness of environmental stewardship opportunities for the entire community. Built in 1999, it reopened in 2020 following extensive renovations and enhancements to deliver an experience built around the theme, “Run of the River.”

Among the features to explore:

  • Alcance del río – A 34-foot-tall sculpture that inspires active play and learning within a series of netted rising platforms that depict microscopic river microorganisms
  • Estaciones táctiles digitales para piscinas – Two virtual shallow pools with touch responsiveness, teeming with wildlife and native plants waiting to be discovered
  • Run of the River, Actividad y Exploración – Lively recreation with rocks to climb, a beaver lodge to visit, a kayak to hop in, and other playful pursuits
  • Run of the River, Educación e Inspiración – Giant river murals, vividly illustrated facts and figures, animal models, and other engaging information about the river ecosystem
  • Otters – Watch the two rescued North American river otters, Louis and Nola, swimming or lounging in their naturalistic indoor/outdoor habitat

“This summer, we are pleased to welcome everyone to explore the Run of the River experience at The Robins Nature Center and learn about our fascinating ecosystem,” said Parke Richeson, Maymont President and CEO. “It adds another dimension to all the adventures you can find across Maymont’s 100 acres, from visiting the rescued wildlife, feeding the friendly farm animals, strolling through the gardens, or taking one of the new immersive audio tours.”

Admission to The Robins Nature Center is $8 for adults, $6 for children 3-16; free for Maymont Members and Museums for All participants. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, guests can visit the Stone Barn Welcome Center, which offers an overview of Maymont’s history, plus selected items from the historic collections on exhibit, and take a self-paced Architecture Tour or Historic Garden Tour (also $8 for adults, $6 for children ages 3-16, and free for members and Museums for All participants).

Maymont is open daily from 10am to 7pm during daylight saving time, with free admission to the grounds, wildlife habitats and Maymont Farm. Voluntary donations and ticket fees help contribute to the care and programming provided by the Maymont Foundation, which is supported primarily through voluntary giving from thousands of individual donors and members, along with foundations and community-minded business partners, and countless volunteer hours.

Maymont is a well-preserved, historic 100-acre estate overlooking the James River that was given to the public by James and Sallie Dooley, who lived there from 1893 to 1925. Today, Maymont is a welcoming community gathering place, with many unique experiences for all to enjoy, including the historic Maymont Mansion, The Robins Nature Center, an arboretum, formal gardens, and habitats for native Virginia wildlife and farm animals. Consistently ranked one of Central Virginia’s top attractions by travelers and locals alike, Maymont serves over 700,000 guests annually, with free admission to the grounds, plus guided and self-guided tours, seasonal events, programs and rental spaces. Since 1975, Maymont has been maintained and operated by the nonprofit Maymont Foundation, committed to creating programs and experiences that delight, educate and inspire its guests.
