Maymont Carriage House & Program
Amidst Maymont’s picturesque complex of estate buildings stands the Normandy-style Carriage House, built of granite quarried on the property. It was designed by Noland and Baskervill and completed in 1904. The first floor included horse stalls, carriage bays and the harness room; the second floor had space for a hayloft and quarters for the coachman. James Dooley loved horses. He won prizes for his carriage horses and was a longtime member of the Deep Run Hunt Club.
In 1975, Elisabeth Scott Bocock, daughter of one of Dooley’s business associates, established the Maymont Carriage Collection. The collection now includes 25 vehicles ranging from the elegant coachman-driven Victoria by Brewster and Co. and a Roof Seat Break to a raffia Governess Cart.
Today Maymont introduces visitors to the horse-drawn era through carriage rides and related programs. Your support – by attending the event and/or making a donation – will help us to continue offering unique and immersive experiences reminiscent of the Gilded Age.
