NEW! Maymont Travels to Swannanoa

September 28, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Enjoy a special excursion to see Swannanoa, the summer home of James and Sallie Dooley on Afton Mountain in Virginia’s beautiful Blue Ridge. Designed by Noland and Baskervill and completed in 1913, the Dooleys’ marble Italian Renaissance-style villa is said to be “one of the few Virginia houses that rivals the lavish ‘cottages’ of Newport, Rhode Island” by UVA architectural historian Richard Guy Wilson. A magnificent Tiffany window and extant interior detailing from the Dooleys’ time gives a sense of the original grandeur of their home. En route to Afton Mountain, Dale Wheary, Maymont’s Curator and Director of Historical Collections and Programs, will provide historical background on Swannanoa. Lunch is in Staunton, the picturesque town where James and Sallie Dooley were married, followed by a tour of spots familiar to the Dooleys. Space is limited: register by September 21.
