Film Premiere: How The Monuments Came Down

Afrikana is pleased to partner with The JXN Project, Maymont, and VPM at Maymont for the world premiere of How the Monuments Came Down, a documentary by Field Studio in association with VPM. We invite you to join us for this evening under the stars featuring a live performance by RVA’s own, Butcher Brown, a pre-screening panel discussion, film screening, food selections provided by Richmond Black Restaurant Experience and beer and wine for purchase. Pre-screening discussion panelists include: Christy Coleman (story advisor and cast member), Dr. Julian Hayter (cast member/ story advisor), Dr. Sesha Joi Moon (story advisor, Afrikana and The JXN Project), and Enjoli Moon (story advisor, Afrikana and The JXN Project), Joseph Rogers (story advisor/ cast member), Krista Weatherford (Maymont), Michael Paul Williams (cast member). Welcome by VPM’s Jayme Swain.

About the Film

How the Monuments Came Down is a timely and searing look at the history of white supremacy and Black resistance in Richmond. Through stories of descendants and activists, the feature-length film reveals how monuments to Confederate leaders stood for more than a century—and why they fell.
