Looking for some ideas to delight, educate and inspire you and your family while you’re staying at home? The Maymont Environmental Education Team has some great suggestions.
Take a look at this week’s recommendations from Environmental Educator, Stu.
Book Suggestion: The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration Into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery
Montgomery’s book is filled with amazing stories and facts about this dynamic animal. I walked away from the book wanting to see this animal up close. When I finally did, I felt a special connection with this spectacular citizen of the sea. Montgomery does a wonderful job of bridging the connections between our own emotions and science.
Craft Suggestion: Accordion Snakes
What I love about this craft is the freedom one has to design a unique snake. The accordion folds really end up looking like scales. The sky really is the limit with this one. I have seen children design super long snakes while others wanted to make a family of baby snakes.
Favorite Animal Fact: Black Bears build nests in trees! Sun Bears do this as well.
Movie Suggestion: Tomorrowland (2015)
This is a Brad Bird film. Bird directed and wrote The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. He even worked as an animator at Disney during the 80s. Bird’s movies always have a lot of heart and this film is about staying optimistic and idealistic in a grim world!
Youtube Video Suggestion: BBC Two – Silent Flight of an Owl
We often hear how owls fly silently, but it is really awesome to see some high tech equipment used to measure this. It blows my mind how amazing some animal adaptations are!
