Seeing Stars at Old-Fashioned Christmas

Seeing stars will be a good thing this Sunday as two award-winning local celebrities join us for an Old-Fashioned Christmas at Maymont. Here are a few fun facts about our special guests:

Desiree Roots as Mrs. Walker, the Dooleys’ head cook
1) Desiree sang a duet with legendary blues guitarist, Buddy Guy, during his East Coast tour last fall.
2) She recently performed in Virginia Repertory Theatre’s production of “DREAMGIRLS.”
3) She has been an opening act for several internationally acclaimed jazz musicians including Phyliss Hyman, Art Porter and B.B. King.
4) Desirée received a Richmond Theatre Critics Circle Award in 2015 for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her role in “Caroline, or Change,” and she was awarded the Theresa Pollak Prize for Excellence in the Arts as a Vocalist in 2004.
5) Her first professional theater role, at age 13, was Dorothy in a production of “The Wiz.”

Alan Sader as St. Nick
1) Alan has appeared in major films including Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” “Evan Almighty” and “The Prince of Tides.”
2) As an actor, director and producer, Alan has shared the stage with Cybill Shepherd and Bob Denver and film sets with Barbara Streisand, Michelle Williams, Sam Waterston, and Samuel J. Jackson, just to name a few.
3) Alan may be best known as the television spokesperson for ChildFund International, an organization dedicated to helping children worldwide.
4) He received a Richmond Theatre Critics Circle Award for Best Lead Actor in a Play for his performance in “King Lear” and Best Supporting Actor for his role in “The Lazarus Syndrome.”
5) This will be Alan’s fourth year performing as St. Nick for Old-Fashioned Christmas (and his first year performing as a Victorian gentleman during Maymont by Moonlight on Fridays, December 9 and 16.)
