Maymont will showcase some of Richmond’s premier performance groups during “OnStage @ Maymont,” a free admission arts and music series offered through June. In its second year, OnStage @ Maymont is generously supported with a grant from The E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.

The series kicked off in April with performances by Mountain Marionettes and John Smallie during Maymont’s Family Easter, and Jonathan Austin and The Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra during Spring Break week. Upcoming performances include:

The University of Richmond Taiko Drummers
Sunday, May 6, 1:30 & 2:30pm, Japanese Garden
For centuries, taiko drums have been used in Shinto and Buddhist ceremonies and celebrations across Japan. In kumi daiko, or “taiko” for short, several drummers are on stage together, and the drums are the main focus. The University of Richmond Taiko Ensemble, with drums built from empty wine barrels and rawhide, continues a trend of college-based taiko groups that began in the 1990s.
